The Musandam Peninsula sits 120 kilometers north of Dubai, separated from the rest of Oman by a narrow wedge of United Arab Emirates territory.
Geological forces lifted limestone beds nearly two kilometers above sea level here, then tectonic subsidence flooded the valleys to create khors — steep-walled inlets that carve 15 kilometers inland. Portuguese cartographers mapped these fjords in the sixteenth century during the Indian Ocean spice trade, and fortifications still crown Khasab's harbor entrance. Today the peninsula remains one of the Arabian Gulf's least-developed coastlines, accessible only by mountain highway or sea.
Traditional dhows once carried dates, dried fish, and pottery between Omani ports. The vessels you board at Khasab retain the lateen-rigged silhouette — raked stem, low freeboard, carved teak transoms — but modern hulls run on diesel and carry cushioned seating for thirty passengers. Departures cluster between eight and ten in the morning to catch the early calm before afternoon thermal winds ripple the khors. Crews navigate past Telegraph Island, a barren outcrop where British engineers maintained a relay station on the Bombay-to-London undersea cable between 1864 and 1868. The station closed after repeated equipment failures in the summer heat, leaving only foundation stones visible at low tide.
Spinner dolphins follow the morning tides into the khors, feeding on sardine schools that shelter in the deep channels. Sightings peak between October and May, when surface temperatures drop below twenty-four degrees Celsius and plankton blooms thicken. Snorkeling stops anchor in sheltered coves where coral gardens cling to submerged cliffs at depths of two to five meters. Visibility averages twelve meters outside the summer months. The geological drama overhead — folded strata, rust-red oxidation bands, vertical dykes cutting through pale limestone — belongs to the Musandam Group, sediments deposited in a shallow Permian sea 270 million years ago and later thrust upward during the collision of the Arabian and Eurasian plates. The cruise routes loop through Khor Ash Sham, the longest navigable inlet, returning to Khasab by early afternoon.
